This study was undertaken by International Media Support to serve four purposes: Firstly, to provide an overview of the type and scope of support provided to the media to date. Secondly, to assess best practices and draw attention to loopholes in that support. Thirdly, to provide insight into the priorities for media support set by different donors and to use this as a basis for enhancing donor coordination. And, lastly, to identify options for support and funds for future media assistance activities.

A Study of Media in Sri Lanka - April 2005
Sri Lanka is currently going through one of the most crucial periods of its post independence history. The civil war, which has claimed nearly 65,000 lives and retarded the country's development process for almost two decades, has seen its longest period of ceasefire. In such a situation, the media plays a paramount role in defining the dimensions of challenge, identifying key actors and by shaping peoples' perceptions through the provision of information and analysis.
The Sri Lankan crisis cannot be understood without bringing media in to the picture. In such a context, the media in Sri Lanka has a pivotal role to play in the creation and consolidation of democratic laws and practices, and of a culture of tolerance and diversity.
