Trash fish production & national fish feed requirements in Sri Lanka - June 2005
Over the last five decades, the fisheries sector of Sri Lanka has undergone a significant transformation resulting in the modernization of an artisanal fishery exclusively based on the use of rudimentary craft and fishing methods and gear.
While the fishing fleet in the early 1950s comprised only traditional crafts such as dug out canoes (oru, Vallam) and log craft (teppam, kattumaram), by the year 2002, the number of traditional boats comprised 15,600 which was only 55 % of the fleet of around 28,135 crafts.
